Mr. Ahrens is currently a research engineer at Georgia Tech’s Center for Distributed Energy and contributes to work done at the National Electric Energy Testing, Research, & Applications Center (NEETRAC). He spent the first 15 years of his career working at Georgia Power Company in power system operations as a control systems engineer and distribution automation project manager. He also held project and people management roles for 15 years at Scientific-Atlanta (now a part of Cisco Systems), providing deployment and support services for utility energy management, digital video, and RF & optical transport infrastructure. His managerial experience included assignments as manager of advanced digital services and worldwide video transmission products at Scientific-Atlanta and Cisco Systems. Prior to coming to Georgia Tech, Mr. Ahrens was a SCADA implementation project manager for Schneider Electric, working with North American utilities and the U.S. Department of Energy.
